In the early morning of July 3, local time, Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Jota died on the road in Zamora province, Spain due to a traffic accident. The Lamborghini supercar they were driving lost control after a tire exploded, rolled several times in the air and then burst into flames.

The reason Diogo Jota had to travel overnight was because he wanted to travel by road to England to join Liverpool. Jota spent several weeks resting after surgery in his home country of Portugal.

The 28-year-old striker had some lung problems and had just undergone minor surgery. After the surgery, doctors advised him not to travel by plane to avoid the high pressure that could affect his breathing and have a negative impact on his lungs. As a precaution, the doctor advised him to choose a safer route than by road.

He chose to heed the doctor’s advice and travel overnight with his brother Andre. Their route would have taken them from Portugal, through the provinces to the Spanish ports of Santander and Bilbao, or north-east towards France, where they would have boarded a ferry to enter the UK. But all that went up in smoke with the crash in the Spanish province of Zamora.

Despite Jota’s decision to avoid flying on medical advice, what he hoped would be a safer trip turned out to be a disaster. The football world continues to mourn the loss of the 28-year-old, who had recently married his childhood sweetheart and was preparing to return to the pitch.

"His passing is not only a loss to the sporting world, but also a painful reminder of the fragility of life...", Sky Sports concluded.
