Former Congressman Will Hurd on June 22 became the latest candidate to join the Republican primary race to compete for the party's nomination for the 2024 US presidential election.

A week ago, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez also joined the race. On the other hand, The New York Times reported on June 22 that Senator Rick Scott is also considering running.

The increasingly crowded field has Republicans worried that it could dilute the votes that should be focused on Trump’s main rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and other potential candidates, potentially allowing Trump to win the party’s nomination again in 2024.

Will the impeachment of President Biden's son affect the 2024 US election?

"The more candidates join the Republican presidential race, the higher Trump's chances of winning because the number of "non-Trump" votes will be diluted," The Hill quoted Republican strategist Ford O'Connell.

As of now, a total of 12 candidates have entered the Republican primary to choose the Democratic challenger to President Joe Biden. National and local polls show Mr. Trump consistently leading the Republican race, with Mr. DeSantis in second place.

“Every person who enters the race who is not Donald Trump is competing for votes from a limited number of Republican voters, and is increasingly fragmenting the number of votes each candidate can receive,” said Rick Wilson, co-founder of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, according to The Hill . Wilson warned that this would put people like DeSantis, or former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, or former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, or any other candidate, in a position to compete for votes that have not yet been cast for Trump.
