Lukashenko says Ukraine deploys 120,000 troops to Belarus border

And in response, Belarus has deployed nearly a third of its armed forces along the entire border between the two countries, state news agency Belta reported.

Mr Lukashenko spoke as the Ukrainian army launched a surprise attack on Russia on August 6, when thousands of troops poured across Russia's western border.

Belta quoted Mr Lukashenko as saying in an interview with Russian state television: "In the face of their aggressive policy, we have deployed and positioned ourselves at certain points - in case of war, they will defend."

Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for Ukraine's border service, told Ukrainian media outlet Ukrainska Pravda on Sunday that the situation on the border with Belarus remained unchanged.

Belarus' professional army has about 48,000 troops, according to a 2022 military report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin said on Friday that there was a high probability of armed provocations from neighboring Ukraine and that the situation on the two countries' shared border "remains tense."

President Lukashenko said the Belarus-Ukraine border was mined "like never before" and that Ukrainian troops would suffer huge losses if they tried to cross the border.
