Marchand makes miracle in 200 meter medley |
This achievement helped Marchand shorten more than a second compared to the old record of 1 minute 54.00 seconds set by Ryan Lochte in 2011 - a milestone once considered "untouchable".
Marchand, 23, who broke Michael Phelps' legendary 400m medley record at the World Championships in Japan two years ago, has once again stunned the world with his outstanding performance at the 2025 World Swimming Championships.
“I honestly can’t believe it. I knew I could get close to my personal record because I felt so good today, but to hit 1 minute 52 seconds is amazing,” Marchand said emotionally.
After winning four individual gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Marchand took a break to recover both physically and mentally. He only returned to the track in May and announced that he would focus all his efforts on the mixed events in Singapore, with the goal of breaking Lochte's record.

That same morning, Marchand kicked off his World Swimming Championship campaign with a qualifying time of 1 minute 57.63 seconds. He decided to “go all out” in the semi-finals, rather than save his energy for the final, and this risk brought about an unexpected result.
“There are still some technical details I will discuss with the coach, but overall I did exactly what I set out to do,” Marchand said.
With this spectacular record-breaking performance, Marchand not only affirmed his position as the world's number 1 swimmer in the mixed event, but also continued to make his name in swimming history with milestones that left fans in awe.
