Security forces exchanged gunfire with the gang as they tried to free the son of a hitman, killing 12 suspects.
The Attorney General's Office of the northern Mexican state of Sonora said on January 21 that Carlos Humberto, a member of a criminal gang, was arrested on January 20 in Camino del Seri, in the capital of Hermosillo of the northern Mexican state of Sonora, on charges of "harming the health of others." Carlos is the son of hitman Jesus Humberto Limon, who worked for a faction of the Sinaloa drug cartel run by the sons of kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
An armed group attacked the agents shortly afterwards on the highway leading from Hermosillo to the town of Bahia de Kino, also in Sonora state, allegedly in an attempt to free Carlos Humberto.
After a gun battle, security forces repelled the attack. Twelve suspects were killed, seven escaped, and several were feared wounded. Two security officials were hospitalized but are in stable condition.

Security forces seized 21 assault weapons, including AR-15 and AK-47 rifles, bulletproof vests, camouflage clothing, six vans and a significant amount of ammunition. The Sonora State Attorney General’s Office is working with security forces to hunt down seven suspects who fled.
Drug lord Guzman is serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in Colorado, USA, but his Sinaloa drug crime network remains one of the most powerful gangs in Mexico.
