Buy the beach to avoid overtourism

Walton (Florida) residents have a headache when tourists flood private beach

This summer, Georgia James Jordan rented a three-bedroom house for his family for four nights at a total cost of about $3,200 , hoping to have the perfect beach vacation. However, he was disappointed after seeing the beach in front of the rental house flooded with tourists.

“It all comes down to one word: crowded,” Jordan told the Wall Street Journal.

However, the owners of the house Jordan rented said they could not "reclaim" their private beach area despite paying for it with a house years ago.

Witnessing the injustice of the boundary between public and private beaches, Eric Wilhelm, founder of two Atlanta-based supply chain companies, spent millions of dollars to buy two beachfront properties on a private beach.

"I feel it's quieter and safer than nearby destinations," Eric said.

Eric Wilhelm is a member of a group of millionaires in Florida (USA). On September 7, the Dailymail reported that the group is fighting to protect their exclusive access to some of the most beautiful beaches in the state.

Earlier this year, about 1,000 properties along the beach in Walton were converted to private ownership, and residents of Walton County, Florida, said it was unfair that tourists could easily vacation on their private beaches.

Eric is not alone. Some Walton County residents, who own the beach for the third or fourth generation and consider it their greatest asset, also feel their personal property is being shaken. They still cannot guarantee their privacy when Florida is being watched by tourists.

Located on the Emerald Coast and bordering the Gulf of Mexico, Walton County boasts 26,000 miles of crystal clear blue water and 16 coastal communities that have become a vacation hotspot over the past few years.

Last year, the locality welcomed more than 2.3 million tourists. This spring, Walton welcomed about 1.3 million people.
