MUSCARIN is a toxin found in mushrooms that caused poisoning in Bao Yen.

Previously, at around 1:30 p.m. on May 16, 2024, at the family of Ms. Ly Thi L. in village 7 Mai Dao, Thuong Ha commune, Bao Yen district, a lunch was organized, including mushroom soup picked from cinnamon hills. About 30 minutes after eating, all 4 people showed symptoms of headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting food, abdominal pain, and loose stools. After being taken to the hospital for treatment, the patients' health stabilized and they were discharged. The authorities sent samples of mushrooms similar to the ones Ms. L.'s family had eaten for testing (the samples were provided by the patient's family).

According to the test result form No. 19697/PKN-VKNQG dated May 28, 2024 of the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene Control, the mushroom sample taken from the poisoning case in Bao Yen tested positive for Muscarine. Mushrooms containing the toxin Muscarine often cause digestive disorders, sweating, difficulty breathing, slow pulse, and eating too much can lead to coma, convulsions, and cardiovascular collapse.

Poisonous mushrooms.

Many types of mushrooms are delicious and have high nutritional value. However, if you accidentally eat highly toxic mushrooms such as white umbrella mushrooms or white cone mushrooms containing the toxin Amatoxin, the risk of death is very high.

To prevent mushroom poisoning, the Department of Food Safety and Hygiene recommends:

- Only eat mushrooms when you are sure they are edible. If you are not sure, then absolutely do not eat them;

- In mountainous areas, when eating mushrooms, you should ask experienced people to identify poisonous mushrooms;

- Do not pick mushrooms that are too young, when the mushroom cap has not yet spread out, because you cannot see all the structural characteristics of the mushroom to clearly determine whether it is poisonous or not.

- Mushrooms are an ideal nutritional environment for many types of microorganisms. Therefore, even for non-toxic mushrooms, if picked and left for a long time before eating or if the mushrooms are spoiled or contaminated before being used, it can easily cause poisoning.

- When encountering someone with mushroom poisoning, induce vomiting as soon as possible and take them immediately to a medical facility for timely treatment;

- Absolutely do not let the victim drink medicine containing alcohol, because the toxins of the mushroom are easily dissolved in alcohol and quickly absorbed into the blood, increasing the toxicity of the poisonous mushroom.
