CBS News today, March 26 (Vietnam time), quoted many informed sources revealing that the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently directed officials to stop processing green card applications from two groups of refugees.

First, refugees are those who have been allowed to come to the United States after security, medical and interview processes that often take years to complete. They are people who have left their home countries because of civil war, foreign conflict, natural disasters.

Second, asylum seekers are foreign nationals who are present in the United States and request protection because of threats from their home country.

The Trump administration is taking action against both programs, which were enacted by Congress , by delaying the process for asylum seekers to the United States and shutting down the asylum system at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the CBS News report, saying the green card processing was halted to comply with two executive orders from President Trump, one of which questioned immigration vetting practices implemented under his predecessor, Joe Biden.

The suspension of green card processing for certain categories is the latest move by the Trump administration to restrict, tighten, and in some cases halt legal immigration based on concerns about national security and fraud.

The Daily Beast also reported on March 24 that Washington may soon begin screening social media accounts of permanent residents and naturalization applicants to check whether they have engaged in hostile behavior toward the United States or shown sympathy for terrorists.

In another development, President Trump on March 25 signed an executive order reforming election activities in the US, including requiring voters to prove their US citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and all ballots must be sent in by election day, according to AP.

The order warns that the federal government will stop funding states whose election officials refuse to comply with Washington's new rules.
