US does not want Israel to retaliate against Iran's nuclear facilities, the parties argue at the UN

According to The Times of Israel, citing US President Biden, the leaders of the G7 group have spoken by phone to discuss the scenario of Israel's response. "We will discuss with Israel what they will do. We all agree that they have the right to respond but they have to respond in kind. It is clear that Iran has gone astray," Mr. Biden said.

G7 leaders expressed “deep concern” about the crisis in the Middle East on October 2, Reuters reported, citing a joint statement, stressing that a diplomatic solution was still possible and that a conflict across the region was not in the interests of any party. President Biden called for a coordinated response, including new sanctions, to Iran’s attack.

Mr. Trump: Opponents no longer respect America

Israel is reportedly considering attacking Iranian nuclear or oil facilities in response to airstrikes from Tehran on October 1. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said shortly after the attack that Iran had made a “big mistake” and would “pay the price.”

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said on October 2 that Israel would respond to Iran's attack, noting that the country's military has the ability to reach and strike any point in the Middle East. "Our opponents who have not understood this until now will understand it soon," Halevi said.

US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said the Biden administration was seeking to align its stance with Israel on any response to Iran's attack, but also acknowledged that the Middle East was "critical" and that a broader escalation could endanger both Israeli and US interests.

Mr. Campbell affirmed that the United States is trying to show its support and commitment to some of Israel's activities. But Mr. Campbell also expressed concern about the prolonged ground campaign in Lebanon.

"The Iranian regime will be held accountable for its actions," Washington's ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, told a UN Security Council press conference on October 2. She warned Iran and its backers against taking actions targeting the United States or Israel.

"The era of empty calls for de-escalation is over," Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon said at an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on October 2. "This is no longer a matter of words. Iran is a real and present danger to the world , and if they are not stopped, the next wave of missiles will not only be aimed at Israel."

For his part, Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani asserted that his country's attack on Israel was aimed at restoring balance in the face of Tel Aviv's growing escalation in the region. On the same day, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said at a press conference in Qatar on October 2 that his country did not want to escalate the conflict, but would respond more strongly if Israel retaliated.

Russia's special envoy to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia has praised Iran for its "exceptional" restraint in recent months, while stressing that the missile attack on Israel should be interpreted in a regional context.
