Secretary Gallant warned that Israel could take Lebanon “back to the Stone Age” if war with Hezbollah broke out, but stressed that Israel was looking to a diplomatic solution pursued by the US. He also said there had been significant progress on the issue of US ammunition supplies to Israel.

The US halted shipments of heavy bombs to Israel in May over concerns about the impact on civilians in Gaza. However, Israel still receives billions of dollars worth of other weapons from the US.

Mr. Gallant stressed that Israel cannot accept a Hezbollah military presence on the border with Lebanon. He also discussed with US officials the plan to manage Gaza after the war.
