Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters' presence in India from March 10-13 at the invitation of the host country's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar marks his first visit to the country of the Ganges since the new government in New Zealand took office in November 2023. His previous visit to India was in February 2020.
Before holding meetings with Indian ministers in New Delhi, which he described as "very important" for bilateral relations, Mr. Winston Peters visited Gujarat state. He also attended the Women's Premier League (WPL) cricket match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
India and New Zealand established diplomatic relations in 1952. According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the two countries share warm and friendly relations based on common democratic traditions and common values underpinned by strong people-to-people ties.
The two countries are cooperating in many areas, including trade and economy, defense and security, education and research, environment and climate change.
New Zealand identified the South Asian country as a priority in its "Open Door to India" policy announced in October 2011 and reiterated in 2015.
India is the first destination of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters on his tour of Asia from March 10-15. After concluding his activities in New Delhi, Mr. Winston Peters will visit Indonesia and Singapore.
