The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has just issued Decision 816/QD-BNN-KL announcing the national forest status in 2023.

The national forest cover rate currently reaches 42.02%.

Accordingly, the forest area (including forest area not meeting the criteria for calculating the coverage ratio) reached more than 14.86 million hectares; of which, natural forest was more than 10.1 million hectares, planted forest was more than 4.7 million hectares.

The forest area meeting the criteria for calculating the coverage ratio is over 13.9 million hectares. Of which, natural forests are over 10.1 million hectares and planted forests are over 3.7 million hectares. The national forest coverage ratio is 42.02%.

Among the ecological regions, the North Central and Central Coast regions have the largest forest area with more than 5.6 million hectares, the forest cover rate is also the largest at 54.23%. Next is the Northern midland and mountainous region with more than 5.4 million hectares, the forest cover rate is 54.04%. The Central Highlands region has more than 2.5 million hectares of forest, the forest cover rate is 46.34%.

The area with the least forest area is the Mekong Delta with 244,643 hectares, forest cover rate of 5.4%.

The Red River Delta and the Southeast have forest areas of 489,406 ha and 479,730 ha, respectively; forest cover rates are 21.26% and 19.6%, respectively.

Among the provinces with forests nationwide, Nghe An is the province with the largest forest area with more than 1 million hectares; followed by Quang Nam with 681,156 hectares, and ranked third is Son La with 676,890 hectares. In addition, some provinces with large forest areas include Thanh Hoa, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Lak, and Lang Son.

Also according to the announcement of the forest status of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province with the highest forest cover rate is Bac Kan with 73.38%; followed by Quang Binh with 68.70%; Tuyen Quang with 65.18%.

Regarding the responsibility for state management of forestry after announcing the current status of forests, the decision clearly states: The Forest Protection Department is responsible for establishing a database to monitor forest developments in accordance with the provisions of law and Decision No. 1439/QD-BNN-TCLN dated April 25, 2016 of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development on promulgating regulations on management and use.

The forestry management information system organizes and uses a database to monitor forest changes nationwide.

The People's Committees of provinces and cities are responsible for the data published on the current status of local forests; assign the People's Committees at all levels (districts, communes) to perform the responsibility of state management of forestry according to the provisions of the Forestry Law.

Use forest status data to update forest developments in the following year; direct agencies, units, and forest owners to seriously monitor, update, and report forest developments annually according to regulations.

For localities with reduced natural forest area in 2023, organize reviews, inspections to clarify the causes and implement solutions to restore the reduced forest area; consider the responsibilities (if any) of relevant organizations and individuals according to regulations...
