Research on alternative materials for construction sand in Da Nang

The Department of Construction of Da Nang City and related agencies are looking for more sources of sand to serve construction needs, while also cooling down the "fever" of material prices on the market.

Dependent on external supply

The shortage of construction materials is causing many difficulties for projects, greatly affecting the progress of public investment projects, private investment projects, as well as construction works of people in Da Nang. The reason is that the supply cannot meet the demand; in particular, many sand, soil, and stone mines in Da Nang have expired or have reached their reserve limit. According to the Da Nang City government, if this situation continues and there is no fundamental solution, it may affect the industrial and construction growth index and Da Nang's growth target in 2025.

Responding to this issue, Mr. Nguyen Ha Nam , Director of the Department of Construction of Da Nang, said that in the period of 2021-2030, Da Nang does not have any sand mine planning. The source of sand supplied for constructions and projects depends entirely on sand mines outside the city area.

According to calculations by the Department of Construction of Da Nang , the amount of sand used for construction of works and public investment projects in 2025 in Da Nang is estimated at about 45,000 m3. Along with that, in the first 5 months of 2025, there were 11 commercial concrete production facilities in the city supplying the entire Da Nang market (an increase of 25% over the same period). Mr. Nam said that it is expected that from now until the end of 2025, Da Nang will need about 797,000 m3 of commercial concrete to serve all works, corresponding to the sand demand of 440,000 m3. Thus, the total volume of sand that Da Nang needs in the coming time is expected to be about 450,000 - 500,000 m3.

Research on alternative materials

Recently, the Da Nang Department of Construction and relevant agencies have studied the sand supply in an area in Hoa Vang with a reserve of 120,000 m3. Through testing, the sand here meets the standards to serve construction needs, but because there is no planning, there is no basis to do this. "We have reported to the City People's Committee to consult with the Department of Agriculture and Environment to study the area with this sand reserve to include in the planning," said Mr. Nam.

In addition, the Department of Construction of Da Nang has also advised the City People's Committee to issue a document requesting coordination to resolve the scarcity and stabilize sand prices in the market. According to Mr. Nam, up to now, Da Nang has mainly used sand from Pha Le sand mine and sand mine in Dai Loc (belonging to Quang Nam province before the merger).

In the past, Pha Le sand mine stopped operating due to many problems and different reasons. Recently, this mine has been operating again, but the sand output is still not enough to meet the demand of Da Nang market. Mr. Nam said that in the coming time, Da Nang Department of Construction will coordinate with the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Department of Industry and Trade and related units to advise the City People's Committee to direct and operate to stabilize the demand for sand in the area.

In the long term, Mr. Nam said that there should be solutions to encourage investment in industrial sand production lines from construction stone, to avoid dependence on natural sand. Along with that, it is necessary to study the topic of saline sand used as construction materials. On the other hand, after the merger, the functional unit needs to review, report, and propose additional plans for protection, exploration, and exploitation of minerals to ensure enough sand for construction works and projects in Da Nang City.

Mr. Ngo Xuan Thang, Chairman of the People's Council of Da Nang City (before the merger) commented that there was a policy for researching the use of materials to replace natural minerals, and many places had done it, so when Da Nang becomes a big city, the pressure on the supply of construction sand will be reduced.
