Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam (living in Tien Giang ) said she took cough medicine as prescribed by her doctor. On the night of the incident, she did not turn on the lights and took a total of 7 pills at once. An hour later, she began to have severe stomach pain. Her family took her to a local hospital and gave her painkillers, but the pain did not subside.

On November 9, Master, Doctor Tran Huu Duy, Center for Endoscopy and Endoscopic Surgery of the Digestive System, Tam Anh General Hospital , Ho Chi Minh City, said that the initial diagnosis of the patient was gastritis and infection. The CT scan results showed a few air bubbles in the right lower rib, near the liver. The stomach had a foreign object located in the pyloric antrum (the end of the stomach), piercing the stomach wall.

The endoscopist removed the foreign object and used a clip to patch the hole in the stomach. The foreign object removed was a diamond-shaped pill with two sharp ends, still in its shell. The patient no longer had stomach pain and recovered quickly after the foreign object was removed. He is expected to be discharged after three days.

Doctor Duy said that gastrointestinal perforation due to foreign objects often occurs, mostly due to accidentally swallowing foreign objects such as bamboo toothpicks, fish bones, poultry bones while eating, drinking, or when children play with toys.

Patients who are not detected and operated on promptly not only suffer from intestinal perforation, bleeding, and infection, but can also experience dangerous complications such as peritonitis, mediastinal abscess, aortic perforation, and a high risk of death.

Doctor Huu Duy recommends that everyone should observe before eating and chew food thoroughly. Elderly people should have relatives to take care of them and go to the doctor early if they have symptoms of abdominal pain of unknown cause so that the doctor can treat them easily and avoid complications.
