"The whole world was shocked that day. I hope that the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral will be as strong as the fire that year but a fire of hope," French President Emmanuel Macron said before the opening ceremony.

On the night of April 15, 2019, a terrible fire broke out at Notre Dame Cathedral, the 860-year-old structure considered a symbol of Paris and France. The fire caused the spire and roof of the cathedral to collapse, threatening the main bell towers and the entire structure.

Thousands of skilled craftsmen, from carpenters and stonemasons to stained-glass window artists, have worked around the clock for the past five years, using age-old methods to restore, repair or replace everything that has been destroyed or damaged.

After five years, the church has been meticulously restored to its former glory. It now welcomes about 15 million visitors a year. It is scheduled to open to visitors on December 8.

According to the French President's Office, a lot of money has poured in from all over the world to contribute to the renovation of the cathedral (more than 840 million euros). Currently, there is still enough money left over to invest further in the building.

The French government has invited international leaders to attend the reopening ceremony, including US President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The ceremony will take place at 7pm local time on December 7.
