Azaleas (tsutsuji in Japanese) are a flower that is very popular among the Japanese people and usually bloom in the first week of April, right after the cherry blossom season ends.

In Japan, rhododendrons are commonly grown in parks, hedges, temple grounds and shrines.

The nearly 1,900-year-old Nezu Shrine located in Bunkyo District, Tokyo is famous for its Azalea Festival, one of the most anticipated spring flower festivals of the year, attracting a large number of locals and tourists.

This year, Nezu Shrine will hold its 54th azalea festival from April 1 to 30. On this occasion, visitors will be able to admire the colorful beauty of the azalea hill with more than 3,000 trees of about 100 different varieties.

In addition to its brilliant beauty with colors such as pink, red, purple, white... the color of azalea flowers also has its own meaning, so this type of flower also appears in the art of flower arrangement - ikebana and ancient Japanese poetry.

Purple and pink azaleas symbolize joy and comfort; yellow azaleas symbolize friendship and family; white azaleas bring a sense of purity and elegance, and red azaleas represent the steadfast love of husband and wife, romance and passion.

Although a simple flower, azaleas always evoke a spirit of elegance and peace, very typical of Japanese culture. Therefore, azaleas are not only one of the symbols of Spring, but the azalea festival is also a part of the spiritual and cultural life of the Japanese people./.
