According to AFP, Chinese authorities have continued to issue orange alerts, the highest level in the country's three-tier warning scale, amid cold weather.

The National Meteorological Center (NMC) said the average temperature could drop by 6 to 12 degrees Celsius on February 22 in the south of the country, where temperatures are currently hovering around 0 degrees Celsius. The NMA also said that temperatures in some localities could drop by more than 20 degrees Celsius.

The Xinhua news agency reported that the NMC had "called on local authorities to take precautions against cold weather, advised people to keep warm and called for necessary measures to protect crops and aquatic products".

In the capital Beijing, overnight snowfall turned the city into a blanket of white on the morning of February 21, with temperatures hovering around freezing.

Vehicles moved slowly on the city's highways, while sidewalks were covered with snow, posing a danger to pedestrians and cyclists.

Some suburban areas recorded up to 4.1 cm of snow, city authorities said, and warned of slippery roads.

"People should arrange their travel, use public buses and subways, drive slowly and pay attention to safety," the city government said in an online statement on the evening of February 20.

Despite the cold weather in the Forbidden City area, a popular tourist destination, some people wearing traditional costumes still showed interest in the picturesque snowfall.

"I'm very happy to be here. The snowfall and the dragon lanterns give me a feeling of abundance... Heavy snowfall signals a year of abundance," AFP quoted a tourist from Sichuan province in southwest China.
