Erdogan re-elected, Germany sends congratulations

The results of the election in Türkiye on May 28 showed that Mr. Tayyip Erdogan and the ruling AKP party will continue to lead Türkiye for another 5 years.

On May 28, the head of Türkiye's Supreme Election Council (CEC), Mr. Ahmet Ener, said that based on preliminary results, incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won the second round of the presidential election.

“The number of votes cast at home and abroad has been counted to 99.43%. Mr. Tayyip Erdogan received 52.14% of the votes, Mr. Kemal Kilicdaroglu 47.86%. The gap between the candidates is now 2.253 million votes. The number of votes that have not been counted is 809,000, which will not affect the result, even if all of them belong to one of the candidates. Thus, according to preliminary calculations, Mr. Erdogan has been elected President of Türkiye,” the official said.

On the same day, this politician 's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) also won the recent parliamentary election.

For his part, speaking to supporters in Istanbul, Mr Erdogan said: “We will govern the country for another five years. We have completed the second round of the presidential election with the support of our country. I would like to express my gratitude to my country for giving us a day of democracy. The winners of both the May 14 election and the May 28 election are all of our 85 million citizens.”

Meanwhile, candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu said he would “continue to fight”. He said that despite the pressure, “the people’s desire for change at the government level is clear”.

Meanwhile, writing on Twitter shortly after the results of the presidential election in Turkey, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated: “Germany and Turkey are close partners and allies. We are also closely linked socially and economically . Congratulations to President Erdogan on his re-election. Now we want to jointly advance our common agenda with new impetus.”

Russia, Qatar, Libya, Algeria, Hungary, Iran and Palestine also sent congratulations to Mr Erdogan on his victory.
