Trump praises billionaire Elon Musk in Congress

US President Donald Trump spoke before Congress implying that billionaire Elon Musk is the head of the US Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE), contrary to the previous statement from the White House.

Just over 20 minutes into his speech before Congress, Trump mentioned the creation of DOGE and praised billionaire Elon Musk. “I’ve created a brand new Government Efficiency Board: DOGE. You may have heard of it,” Trump said, then pointed to Musk, praising the billionaire for his hard work.

According to NBC News, Mr. Trump also said that billionaire Musk “heads” DOGE. This goes against the previous announcement from the White House, that Mr. Musk is not an employee of DOGE and that the directorship belongs to Ms. Amy Gleason.

Billionaire Elon Musk (center) appeared at President Trump's speech before Congress on March 4.

Mr Trump praised Mr Musk’s work in cutting federal government jobs and budgets. “We appreciate it. Everybody here, even on this side (referring to the Democratic benches) appreciates it, I think. They just don’t want to admit it,” he said.

Mr Trump then listed many programs that the US government had ended, alleging billions of dollars in waste and fraud.

In a related development, Mr. Musk shared a chart showing millions of people in the US Social Security data over the age of 110, including information about an individual around 360 - 369 years old. ABC News said that the government data has some people over 150 years old, possibly due to the complex or outdated Social Security system, but this does not mean that people with inconsistent information can receive benefits.

“By cutting out every fraud, waste, and theft, we will beat inflation, lower mortgage rates, lower car payments and food prices, protect seniors, and put more money in the pockets of American families,” the US President said.

Mr. Musk said that he had set a goal of cutting $2 trillion in federal spending. DOGE claimed to have cut about $105 billion. However, the reports and statistics released by DOGE have been accused by some media outlets of containing inaccurate information.
