OpenAI is testing new reasoning artificial intelligence (AI) models, the o3 and o3 mini, a sign of growing competition with rivals like Google to create smarter models capable of solving complex problems.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the AI startup plans to launch the o3 mini by the end of January 2025 and the full o3 later, as powerful large language models can outperform existing models and attract investment and new users.

Microsoft-backed OpenAI released its o1 AI models in September, designed to spend more time processing queries to solve difficult problems.
The AI company says that o1 models are capable of reasoning through complex tasks and can solve more difficult problems than previous models in science , coding, and mathematics.
OpenAI's new o3 and o3 mini models, which are currently undergoing internal safety testing, will be more robust than the previously released o1 models, explains Sam Altman.
The GenAI pioneer announced that it is opening up an application process for outside researchers to test o3 models before public release, which will end on January 10, 2025.
OpenAI kicked off the AI race after launching ChatGPT in November 2022. The company’s growing popularity and new product launches helped OpenAI close a $6.6 billion funding round in October.
Meanwhile, Google rival Alphabet released the second generation of its Gemini AI model in early December, as the search giant aims to regain its lead in the AI technology race.
