Cheese is not only delicious but can also do wonders for your health. Scientists have recently discovered a unique effect of cheese.


Research recently published in the medical journal Sleep Medicine has found a way to "treat" a dangerous nighttime illness using cheese.

Sleep apnea is extremely common, a condition in which a person stops breathing repeatedly during the night, explains Dr. Daniel Barone, a sleep physician at Weill Cornell Medicine. Frequent episodes of this condition can cause the body to lack sleep. Interrupted sleep increases blood pressure and heart rate. Over time, this can lead to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and weight gain.

Eating cheese reduces the risk of sleep apnea by 28%

To examine the relationship between cheese consumption and sleep apnea risk, researchers analyzed data from 400,000 participants from the UK Biobank and the Finnish FinnGen Biobank.

The results found that eating cheese reduced the risk of sleep apnea by 28%, according to the health news site Verywell Health.

The team also examined 44 biomarkers associated with sleep apnea risk, and found that cheese can directly impact six of them, including diastolic blood pressure.

Researchers say essential nutrients in cheese may positively impact some of the body's markers linked to sleep apnea.

Frequent sleep apnea causes the body to lack sleep. Interrupted sleep increases blood pressure and heart rate. Over time, it can lead to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and weight gain.

Previous studies have shown that cheese consumption also helps reduce high blood pressure, a known risk factor for sleep apnea, said Daniella Marchetti, PhD, a clinical psychologist specializing in behavioral sleep medicine in the US. Other small studies have also shown that cheese consumption helps increase testosterone levels, a potential preventative measure for sleep apnea.

Cheese should be consumed in moderation.

These findings highlight the unique nutritional properties of cheese, Dr. Marchetti said. Cheese can be a rich source of essential nutrients, including high-quality protein, calcium, fatty acids and other vitamins that support overall health.

But Dr Barone says the odd thing is that cheese is high in calories - which often leads to weight gain, and being overweight is a risk factor for sleep apnea.

Therefore, for best results for sleep apnea, Dr. Barone recommends consuming cheese in moderation, according to Verywell Health.

Dr. Barone also stressed the need for further research.
