Established in June 2022 with the business of producing and trading forestry seedlings, Thuong Xuan Forestry - Medicinal Plants Cooperative in Luan Thanh commune has affirmed its role in supporting members and local people to improve production skills and income. After understanding the market in mountainous districts with great demand for forestry seedlings, the Cooperative has invested in improving production skills in the field of seedlings; invested in building a nursery of about 1 hectare that meets the prescribed standards. With a suitable production and business plan, the Cooperative has coordinated with the Thuong Xuan Protective Forest Management Board to implement the Project "Application of science and technology to build a model for planting, processing and consuming some medicinal species of Cat Sam and Dioscorea in the mountainous areas of Thanh Hoa province". Accordingly, in addition to producing hybrid acacia varieties, the Cooperative researches and produces some medicinal plant varieties, such as Cat Sam, Dioscorea, and Bach Bo... At the same time, it cooperates with people to develop medicinal material growing areas.
Mr. Le Xuan Long, director of the cooperative, said: In addition to supplying the market with about 1 million forestry seedlings and 400,000 medicinal plant seedlings each year, the cooperative also supports people in planting and preserving some rare medicinal herbs. From 2022 to July 2025, the cooperative has promoted, provided technical support, provided seedlings, and linked with households in need to participate in developing a raw material area of 13 hectares of Chinese yam, 35 hectares of sand ginseng, and 2 hectares of Cynomorium.
It is known that in 2023, the yam was harvested and the profit after deducting costs reached 60 to 80 million VND/ha/year. The estimated income value of the tubers of the cat sam plant after 6 to 7 years of planting is 10 times higher than that of growing regular acacia trees per cycle and unit of planting area. Currently, the Cooperative has cooperated with the people of communes in the region such as Van Xuan, Luan Thanh, Tan Thanh... with land suitable for growing yam and cat sam and signed contracts to supply seedlings, transfer science and technology and sign contracts to consume post-harvest products for the people. The annual revenue of the Cooperative is about 1 billion VND, profit is more than 300 million VND, creating stable jobs for 6 workers, income of 5 million VND/person/month.
For Dong Tam Agricultural Services and Plant Seed Cooperative, Ngoc Lien Commune, although it does not directly produce plant seeds, the Cooperative has become a trusted address for providing seeds, production materials and technical support for the development of many types of fruit trees, such as: longan, pineapple, orange, grapefruit... Mr. Do Dong Tam, Director of the Cooperative, said: The Cooperative was established in 2022 with the purpose of supporting production techniques, supplying fruit tree seeds and consuming fruit tree products for local people. To develop sustainably in this field, it is necessary to have production technical skills, grasp market tastes to guide people to develop appropriately. Along with that, before supplying seeds for people to produce, the Cooperative has proactively linked with product consumption units. Typically, such as: Xuan Thien Group Joint Stock Company consumes pineapple; traders inside and outside the province consume longan and jackfruit for people. In addition, the Cooperative also researches and links to support people to consume many other types of agricultural products.
It is known that Dong Tam Agricultural Services and Seed Cooperative currently has 60 members, and has affirmed its brand thanks to the successful development of the off-season longan model, with a total area of about 30 hectares. In addition, the Cooperative is supporting people to pilot production of 50,000 MD2 honey pineapple trees, an area of more than 5 hectares, and 100 PT79 red-fleshed jackfruit trees from Indonesia. It is expected to expand the production model to a large scale in 2025.
In recent years, the demand for afforestation and crop restructuring among local people in the province has been quite high. Therefore, many cooperatives have been sensitive and developed models of production and trading of plant varieties to meet market demand. According to a survey by the Thanh Hoa Cooperative Union, there are currently about 10 cooperatives in the province participating in the production and trading of plant varieties (in addition to rice and vegetables). Most cooperatives use human resources with technical production skills and directly participate in production with local people, creating sustainability in operations. Thanks to that, they have achieved outstanding economic efficiency, contributing to increasing income for members and workers.
To support cooperatives in effective production and business, in addition to supporting access to preferential loans from the Central and Provincial Cooperative Development Support Fund, the Cooperative Union also regularly organizes training courses and exchanges experiences to spread effective models to the community. At the same time, it improves management skills and market development for cooperative members.
