Chinese military simulates stealth fighter jets taking off from Japan

The Chinese military simulated an attack on Shanghai to see how close fighter jets from Japan could get, according to the South China Morning Post today, November 3.

Could a stealth fighter jet take off from Japan, bypass China's air defenses and bomb Shanghai? Chinese military researchers say they have simulated the scenario, according to the South China Morning Post .

According to Chinese military scientists , their 10 rounds of computer simulations found that the stealth fighter could be detected by some ground-based radars from a distance of 180 kilometers.

That means a stealth fighter like the F-22 or F-35 would be detected before it was within the 24km range needed to use precision-guided bombs for an attack on ground targets, according to the South China Morning Post .

The F-35 can switch to “full power mode” to use larger, longer-range ground-attack missiles, but in doing so it loses its stealth capabilities, so it can be detected from much further away.

Simulations found that non-stealth aircraft could be detected from 450 km away.

But an F-35 can also carry cruise missiles with a range of more than 900km. At its closest point, Japan is about 800km from Shanghai, according to the South China Morning Post .

What weapons does Japan want with its record defense budget proposal?

Chinese military researchers did not say which fighter jets were being targeted in the computer simulations. Both Japan and the United States operate stealth fighters in the region.

In July 2020, the US approved Japan's plan to buy 105 F-35 fighter jets, according to Defense News . If the purchase goes through, Japan will have a total of 147 F-35s, making it the second-largest operator of the stealth fighter after the US.
