(NLDO) - LiDAR technology - using lasers to search for hidden structures - has helped Romanian scientists make a "shocking discovery in the Neamț forest".
A team led by the Romanian National Institute for Research and Development of Geophysics has released a mysterious image in which a laser beam has revealed a quadrilateral structure emerging from the forest, next to a river in the Neamț district.
According to Heritage Daily , it is one of the ancient fortifications, belonging to the fortified settlements that were built here 5,000 years ago.
The team described what they found in the forest as a "shocking discovery".

The newly identified ancient settlements span from Romania's Neamț Forest to Moldova's Subcarpathian region.
“LiDAR scans show that most of the fortified sites are located in high areas with good visibility and are reinforced with ditches and even mounds to increase their defensive capabilities,” said Prof. Vasile Diaconu from the Neamț National Museum Complex.
LiDAR is a survey method that measures the distance to a target by illuminating the target with an ambient laser and measuring the reflected pulses with a sensor.
The technique could help researchers "see" through tree canopies to create 3D maps of structures that have been covered by layers of vegetation over thousands of years.
Field measurements also revealed some ditches described as “impressive in size”, up to several hundred metres long, requiring a great deal of labour to construct.
It is estimated that these settlements were used from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age.
The study also used the same non-invasive technology to examine a known structure in the aforementioned forest, called Neamț Citadel, a medieval fortress built in the 14th century.
