A 2-1 win over Monterrey puts Borussia Dortmund into the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup, where they will face Real Madrid on July 6. However, the much-anticipated clash between brothers Jude and Jobe Bellingham will not take place.
Jobe, a €30.5m signing from Sunderland, is expected to face his brother, and he was cheerful when asked about the prospect before the game.
However, the “derby” dream was shattered after a personal mistake, an unnecessary foul near the penalty area that earned him a yellow card and he was substituted in the 55th minute in disappointment. Despite a positive start to his time at Dortmund with three consecutive starts, this card meant that “little brother” Bellingham was suspended for receiving two yellow cards since the beginning of the tournament.

After the match, Dortmund coach Niko Kovac said: "Everyone saw that Jobe was very disappointed. I think he didn't know that the second yellow card would mean a suspension for the next match. When he found out at half-time, he was very surprised.
Jobe is still young. So is his brother Jude. I think they will have the chance to face each other soon, maybe in the Champions League next season. They have a lot of future ahead of them. It would have been great to meet each other in the FIFA Club World Cup, but it didn't happen."
As for Jude Bellingham, he played for Dortmund from 2020-2023 before moving to Real Madrid for €113 million. Since then, he has faced his former team twice and won both times, most notably in the 2024 Champions League final (2-0) and the subsequent group stage match (5-2).
Although fans missed the Bellingham brothers' showdown, the confrontation between Dortmund and Real Madrid still promises to be exciting.
