Images taken by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust provide a close-up view of the 44-metre-long ship that has been hidden beneath the ice and frigid waters of the Weddell Sea for more than a century.

Although the mast and some of the railings have rotted away, parts of the deck are largely intact. In close-up shots, plates and other food items are scattered across the deck, and a boot rests among collapsed mooring lines. Through the debris, some of the old linoleum floors still bear a star pattern.

These images and 3D scans have been released as part of a documentary due out on November 1, which follows the exploration of the Endurance wreck in 2022.

“The greatest survival story in human history” is also “a story of failure,” says Dan Snow, the documentary’s executive producer, in the trailer. The crew of the Endurance set out to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent by land, until disaster struck.

The crew on board Endurance

The crew set out from South Georgia, an island in the South Atlantic, in August 1914. But before the Endurance could reach the Antarctic coast, the ship became trapped in ice, trapping Shackleton and 27 others.

After 10 months of bearing the weight of icebergs, the ship broke apart and sank in front of its crew, leaving them with only a few supplies and a few rowboats.

Gathering their meager supplies in lifeboats, the crew sailed until April 1916, when they reached uninhabited Elephant Island, some 150 miles off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Faced with dire circumstances, Shackleton and five other crew members set out to find help. They sailed more than 1,200 km in a 22-foot rowboat to a whaling station on South Georgia Island.

It took another four months to organize a rescue party for the remaining stranded crew. But miraculously, when they reached the isolated island, Shackleton discovered that all the crew had survived.
