Notable Highlights

Because it has not been officially announced, the specific ranking of Quang Nam tourism according to the Vietnam Tourism Development Index 2023 is unknown.

However, through the analysis of experts at the workshop on the model of green tourism destinations in Quang Nam recently held in Hoi An City, it also partly reflects the overall capacity of Quang Nam tourism according to VTDI 2023.

VTDI is an assessment toolkit based on 5 groups of indicators, 17 pillars, 111 indicators calculated based on survey data and quantitative data sources.

According to VTDI 2023's assessment of Quang Nam tourism, the index groups with strengths compared to the national average include: natural resources, cultural resources, environmental and energy sustainability in tourism, and aviation infrastructure.

Of which, natural resources and cultural resources have outstanding indexes compared to the average (rated at 3.79 points compared to the average of 3.18 points).

This is understandable because Quang Nam is the only locality in the country that owns two world cultural heritages recognized by UNESCO, besides that there is also the World Biosphere Reserve of Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An.

Quang Nam has also assessed and established 125 tourism resources, including 58 natural tourism resources and 67 cultural tourism resources.

Meanwhile, some notable index groups of Quang Nam tourism are underrated according to VTDI 2023 such as: Uneven distribution of tourist density; favorable environment (including business environment, safety and security, information technology readiness level, etc.); socio-economic impact of tourism, etc.

In the index group of tourism sustainability, Quang Nam is only at an average level, not a strong point, although in recent years the locality has paid great attention to this issue.

Mr. Truong Nam Thang - senior expert on marketing and tourism policy of the Swiss Sustainable Tourism Program analyzed that all 5 indicators in the pillar of socio-economic impact of Quang Nam tourism are below average.

The socio-economic impact of tourism in Quang Nam is low due to low revenue from tourism-related services, low contribution of tourism to the province's GRDP, and limited average income in the accommodation and catering sector.

Improved synchronization

To further improve the index based on the results from VTDI 2023, experts recommend that Quang Nam needs to promote cooperation with local businesses, communities and travel agencies to ensure that the benefits of tourism are widely distributed. Implement programs to encourage local entrepreneurship in tourism-related activities.

Mr. Tran Xuan Moi - Director of ATM Management Consulting Company said that strongly developing community tourism and rural tourism by bringing programs, tours, and products of these types into tourism companies to increase social interaction, share economic benefits harmoniously, and reduce the capacity of the core destination area is an effective way to improve the group of indicators of socio-economic impact of tourism.

Prioritizing travel and tourism is also an important solution to increase local tourism capacity. This includes working closely with government agencies to prioritize tourism in policy making and budget allocation. Collaborating with provinces that score high in this pillar is also a solution to better understand how to effectively develop tourism.

According to Mr. Truong Nam Thang, tourism is a comprehensive economic sector, so the tourism management agency alone cannot improve and enhance the indicators according to VTDI 2023, but requires the synchronous participation of relevant functional agencies.

“There are many Quang Nam indicators that are underrated but are not related to the tourism industry and are managed by many different departments and agencies.

Therefore, we really hope that after the official index set is announced, Quang Nam will have technical meetings to analyze each group of indexes and pillars to know where local tourism is strong and weak and which agency or unit will be responsible for improving each part of the work" - Mr. Truong Nam Thang said.

VTDI 2023 is independently evaluated by domestic and international organizations in over 30 provinces and cities with strong tourism development in Vietnam. In 2021, Quang Nam ranked 4th out of 15 provinces and cities surveyed according to the results of the Vietnam Provincial Tourism Destination Competitiveness Index.

The project to develop a set of provincial tourism competitiveness indices for Vietnam has been funded by the European Union Delegation to Vietnam and provided technical support to the National Tourism Advisory Board (TAB) since 2019 with the aim of promoting the improvement of tourism competitiveness of each locality, contributing to improving the competitiveness of Vietnam's tourism.
