Tea helps reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, thanks to its rich flavonoid content

Evidence from studies has shown that higher flavonoid intake increases insulin sensitivity, reduces insulin resistance, and improves blood lipid profiles.

The study, conducted by scientists from Queen's University Belfast (Northern Ireland), Oxford University (UK) and Edith Cowan University (Australia), investigated the link between a flavonoid-rich diet and type 2 diabetes on a large scale.

A total of 113,097 people from the UK Biobank took part. They had their 24-hour dietary intake assessed, which was then analyzed to calculate their flavonoid intake.

During a median follow-up of 12 years, there were 2,628 cases of type 2 diabetes.

The results found that consuming more flavanoid-rich foods (6 servings per day) reduced the risk of diabetes by up to 28%, compared to consuming less (1 serving per day), according to the medical website News Medical.

And each additional serving of flavonoid-rich foods per day reduced the risk of diabetes by 6%.

Specifically, the results showed: Consuming a lot of black tea or green tea helps reduce the risk of diabetes by up to 21%.

This finding encourages increased tea consumption as well as fruit intake, especially berries, to reduce the risk of diabetes.

Additionally, researchers found that eating lots of berries reduced the risk of diabetes by 15% and eating lots of apples reduced the risk of diabetes by 12%, according to News Medical.

The reason why flavonoid-rich foods work wonders is because a flavonoid-rich diet improves body weight control, glucose metabolism, kidney function, and liver function, researchers explain.

This finding encourages increased tea consumption as well as fruit intake, especially berries and apples, to reduce the risk of diabetes.
