Tokyo tests self-driving buses

On October 2, Japan began testing self-driving buses in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

The trial comes as the country pushes for driverless services and automated public transport solutions to address a shortage of bus drivers.

This bus operates along a route connecting the bustling Shinjuku Station with two important Tokyo Metropolitan Government buildings.

The bus can accommodate up to 18 passengers per trip, with a maximum speed of up to 50km/h. Passengers need to book in advance through the online system.

The self-driving bus trial will last until October 13. The self-driving buses will operate 12 trips per week, from 10am to 4pm daily. The operating schedule will be adjusted to reduce during weekends and holidays.

According to local media, Tokyo authorities said the test run of self-driving buses aims to evaluate the performance of self-driving buses in areas with relatively high traffic density, and to evaluate infrastructure standards for lanes dedicated to self-driving vehicles.
