Greek Prime Minister hails victory in regional elections

Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis assessed the results of the regional elections as an endorsement of his ruling New Democracy (ND) party.

On October 8, partial results of the regional elections in Greece were announced. Former ND minister Nikos Hardalias was elected Governor of the Attica region (including the capital Athens) in the first round with more than 45% of the vote.

Under Greek law, candidates need a majority of more than 43% of the vote to win in local and regional elections.

In Thessalonika, Greece's second largest city, Mr. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the candidate supported by the People's Party, was re-elected as Governor of the Central Macedonia region for a third term, with more than 60% of the votes.

In addition, voters in the remaining 6 out of 13 regions of Greece will go to the polls on September 15.

Previously, in June, ND returned to power in Greece with 40.5% of the vote, 20 points higher than its main rival, the far-left party Syriza.

Commenting on the results, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated: “We have emphasized the political importance of the regional elections and at least seven regions have decided to support ND in the first round.”

According to him, the political message of the vote affirmed the public's trust in ND.
