Mr Albanese is the first Australian leader to visit China since 2016, part of an effort to mend ties that have deteriorated over several years due to disputes over Chinese telecommunications company Huawei and the origins of COVID-19.

After his speech, Mr Albanese said he welcomed Premier Li Qiang's comments at the Expo, describing them as "very positive". The Chinese premier said China would continue to expand market access and imports.

Australia hopes the barriers to Australian red meat and seafood products will be removed “in a very short period of time”.

In his speech, Mr Albanese described the relationship between the two countries as "mature" and said it was "energised by the complementary nature of our economies ".

“Along with other economies in the region, Australia and China have prospered thanks to the certainty and stability provided by rules-based trade,” Mr Albanese said in an official statement, according to a transcript.

The Albanese government has worked to stabilise relations with China since taking power last year and China has lifted most of the trade bans imposed during the 2020 diplomatic dispute.
