Billionaire Elon Musk has called for the US to leave the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and said it is 'unreasonable' that the US should pay for Europe's defense.

Billionaire Musk's comments come at a time when NATO's future is in limbo.

Billionaire Musk, co-founder of Tesla and SpaceX and currently a senior advisor to US President Donald Trump, commented on a post on his X account (formerly Twitter name) on March 9 with the content that the US should leave NATO right now. "We should," Mr. Musk agreed.

On March 3, Mr. Musk also wrote on X that he agreed with the proposal that the US should separate from NATO and the United Nations.

Comments calling for the US to leave NATO by President Trump's adviser come at a time when the future of the alliance is in limbo.

NBC reported on March 6 that President Trump discussed with his assistants about adjusting the US commitment to NATO in the direction of asking members to increase defense spending in the coming time.

Speaking to the press the same day, the White House owner said he had made it clear to NATO allies that the US would refuse to protect members who did not contribute enough money to defense efforts.

Within NATO, Europe now depends on the United States for communications, intelligence, logistics, as well as battlefield leadership and firepower.

European Union (EU) leaders held an emergency meeting in Brussels last week with the aim of sharply increasing defense spending. During the meeting, officials from the old continent approved a plan to "re-arm Europe" worth up to 800 billion euros, with 150 billion euros in the form of loans for member states to upgrade their military capabilities.

Under a law passed in 2023, a US president cannot unilaterally withdraw from NATO without a two-thirds majority in the Senate or a bill passed by both houses of Congress .

On April 4, 32 NATO member countries will celebrate the 76th anniversary of the founding of this military alliance.
