International Organization for Migration opens new office in Caribbean country

The establishment of an International Organization for Migration (IOM) office will help Barbados and the Caribbean Community (Caricom) develop sound migration policies and strategies.

Barbados Foreign Minister Kerrie Symmonds emphasized that after signing an agreement with IOM Regional Director for North, Central America and the Caribbean Michele Klein-Solomon to establish an IOM Caribbean regional coordination office in the capital Bridgetown on August 26.

According to Ms. Symmonds, IOM's new office in Barbados continues to help Caribbean communities reap the benefits of regular migration despite challenges such as natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods.

The establishment of the office with about eight staff is "part of a national, regional and hemispheric effort to facilitate safe, orderly, humane and regular migration," Barbados' foreign minister stressed.

Affirming that well-managed migration has the potential to help economic growth, Ms Symmonds said “countries like Barbados with ageing populations may, in the coming years, need migrants to fill important gaps in the labour market”.

Barbados officially became the 175th member of IOM on November 30, 2022.
