The White House said on September 12 that President Joe Biden will host a meeting with the leaders of Australia, India and Japan in the Quad group on September 21 in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

The summit comes as Mr Biden considers his foreign policy legacy in the final months of his term, after he withdrew from the re-election race and nominated Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him.

"This will be President Biden's first time hosting foreign leaders in Wilmington as president, reflecting his deep personal relationships with each of the Quad leaders, as well as the importance of the Quad to all of our nations," AFP quoted White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre in a statement.

The spokesman added that Mr Biden looked forward to welcoming Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.

The Quad grouping has existed since 2007, but President Biden has pushed the alliance hard in an effort to emphasize international alliances to contain rivals, including China.

He hosted the first summit of Quad leaders at the White House in 2021 and the group has held annual summits since.

The White House statement said the leaders will focus on “advancing their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.” The next summit will be hosted by India, according to the White House.
