During his visit to Berlin from November 16-17, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and host Prime Minister Olaf Scholz will discuss “the entire range of political issues” during a meeting at the Chancellery, a German government official said.

The meeting between the two leaders comes as Ankara's relations with the European Union face new pressure from the Israel-Hamas war. President Erdogan's accusations against Israel have caused new tensions with the European Union.

Chancellor Scholz said on November 10 that the German government will continue its diplomatic efforts to prevent the fighting in Gaza from turning into a major conflict in the region.

Affirming Germany's position "on the side of Israel", the German leader said at a defense event in Berlin, "we will support Israel, whenever necessary, in exercising its right to self-defense".

On the same day, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock began a tour of the Middle East as part of Berlin's diplomatic efforts to prevent the crisis from escalating.

This will be President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's first visit to Germany since 2020. About 3 million people of Turkish origin live in Germany.

At least 11,078 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's offensive on Gaza since October 7, Al Jazeera reported. Israeli figures put the death toll at more than 1,200.
