This year's 11th graders will be the first batch of candidates to take the new high school graduation exam.

Should history be compulsory or optional?

The Government has just requested the Ministry of Education and Training to soon study and announce a plan for the high school graduation exam from 2025 to ensure it is concise, effective, practical, reduces pressure, reduces costs and creates social consensus. The Ministry of Education and Training previously proposed 2 options for opinion survey:

  • Option 1: 6 exam subjects including 4 compulsory subjects (math, literature, history, foreign language) and 2 elective subjects (from the subjects students choose to study in grade 12).
  • Option 2: 5 subjects including 3 compulsory subjects (math, literature, foreign language) and 2 elective subjects from the subjects already studied (including history). Students studying the regular education program do not take the foreign language exam.

High school administrators, teachers and students expressed mixed views on these two options.

Master Nguyen Viet Dang Du, Head of the History Department at Le Quy Don High School (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City), expressed: "I support option 1 because history is a compulsory subject like math, literature, and foreign languages". Mr. Dang Du also suggested that the Ministry of Education and Training should publicly disclose the results of the opinion survey in a transparent manner so that when the high school graduation exam plan is officially released, "everyone will be convinced".

Meanwhile, Master Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1), reserved his opinion on option 2 (5 subjects, of which history is an elective). Master Phu noted that if there were more subjects, organizing the exam would cost more money. According to Mr. Phu, it is not necessary that history is a compulsory subject for students to take the high school exam in this subject.

Besides, Mr. Phu said that students will be more comfortable with option 2 because they can be proactive and flexible in choosing subjects according to their career orientation, promoting their personal abilities and thinking.

Which option do students choose?

A vice principal of a high school in Can Gio district said: "The school board has conducted a survey of students and teachers' opinions about the graduation exam plan from 2025. Of course, it is understandable that students chose option 2 (5 subjects and history is an elective subject)."

"Almost 100% of teachers also chose option 2. Although history is a compulsory subject, students should choose it themselves because it depends on their wishes and future career orientation," said the vice principal.

Nguyen Le Song Thuong (grade 11, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) said that, except for students who are truly passionate about history and have a career orientation related to this subject, most students study history to cope.

"If history is a compulsory subject, I think most students will just memorize it to pass the high school graduation exam. This will only create more pressure for students. Therefore, option 2 is the right choice," Song Thuong shared.
