The exhibition introduces the journey of three painters Le Pho (1907-2001), Mai Trung Thu (1906-1980) and Vu Cao Dam (1908-2000), from their time studying at the Indochina College of Fine Arts until their success in France.
According to Ms. Anne Fort, manager of the Cernuschi Museum, all three artists have many valuable works that are sought after by experts, but they have in common that they are not yet widely known to the public. The exhibition is an opportunity for the French public in particular and international friends in general to explore and learn about the pioneers of modern Vietnamese art.
“The exhibition has a special significance as it is held on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Indochina College of Fine Arts (1924-2024). All three artists were prominent students in the first two academic years of the school. They all have a deep love for both countries. This is clearly shown in the works of all three artists, images of Vietnamese heritage combined with modern French art,” said Ms. Anne Fort.
150 works, a blend of Western and traditional Vietnamese art, are divided into five exhibition areas with different themes such as “The Indochina School of Fine Arts and the Birth of Modern Vietnamese Art”, “International Exhibition: Official Support”, “Period 1931-1937: From the Call of Paris to the Impossibility of Return”, “The Period in France: The Revolution of Three Artists” and “Literary Inspiration”.
Coming here, visitors can better understand the biography, formation process as well as the painting style of all three artists, thereby having an overview of a new art style called "Indochinese style", marking the spread of influence of Vietnamese art in modern times.
Ms. Marie Thi Mai Nguyen, a Vietnamese expatriate in France, shared: “I was moved and overwhelmed when I came here because so many childhood memories came flooding back. Seeing these works, especially those by the late painter Le Pho, who used to be a friend of my family, was an exciting experience.”
Mr. Louis Le Kim, grandson of the late painter Le Pho, said the exhibition brought pride to family members and close friends when introducing typical paintings of modern Vietnamese art to a large French audience.
“I have always followed the creative process of the late painter Le Pho since I was very young. He was a person devoted to art and worked very enthusiastically even when he was old in his studio in District 15. His works have attracted more and more attention in recent years and being exhibited at the National Museum is a source of pride for my whole family,” said Louis Le Kim.
The exhibition is an opportunity for French and international art lovers to learn more about the talent of artists representing the development of Vietnamese art in the 20th century, through silk paintings, oil paintings on canvas, lacquer screens, and plaster or bronze sculptures.
