Prime Minister Khasawneh is a veteran diplomat and former royal adviser who has held the post for nearly four years.

Meanwhile, unnamed officials said Jaafar Hassan, head of King Abdullah's Office, was expected to succeed him as prime minister. Hassan previously served as planning minister.

Regarding the recent parliamentary election, according to the results announced by the Jordanian Independent Election Commission on September 11, the Islamic Action Front (IAF) party led in the country's parliamentary election but did not win a majority of seats.

Winning 31 out of 138 seats in the Jordanian Parliament is a historic result for the IAF and its largest representation since it won 22 out of 80 seats in the Jordanian Parliament in 1989. In the 2020 elections, the IAF won only 10 seats.

Under the Jordanian Constitution, most power rests with the king, who appoints the government and can dissolve parliament. The Jordanian parliament can force the cabinet to resign by passing a vote of no confidence.
