The information was given at the workshop "Investment promotion in supporting industry", organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade on the morning of August 5.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Vu Ba Phu - Director of the Trade Promotion Agency (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that in the context of the global supply chain being reshaped, Vietnam is emerging as a new strategic manufacturing center in Southeast Asia.

The Vietnamese government pays special attention to developing supporting industries with many preferential policies on investment, trade and technical support... to increase the localization rate and reduce import dependence.

On the side of the Trade Promotion Agency, it is coordinating with the Industry Department, the Foreign Investment Agency, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), KOTRA and a system of nearly 60 Vietnamese trade offices abroad to proactively implement many investment promotion programs in the field of industry and trade, focusing on regular connections with potential FDI enterprises to expand opportunities and cooperation space towards forming strong connections, connecting the value chain of Vietnam's industrial production.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) is playing an increasingly important role in the supporting industry. In 2024, the processing and manufacturing industry alone attracted more than 25.5 billion USD of newly registered FDI capital, accounting for nearly 67% of total FDI capital in Vietnam.

Fields such as electronic component manufacturing, precision mechanics, auto parts - electric motorbikes... are being focused on and developed by many multinational corporations and FDI enterprises.

According to a JETRO survey in 2024, more than 56% of Japanese enterprises in Vietnam plan to expand their investment in the next 1-2 years. Of these, nearly half are operating in the industrial manufacturing sector, with the top priority being to expand the local input supply chain.

Currently, Vietnam has about 1,700 FDI enterprises operating in the supporting industry sector, accounting for about 40% of the total number of enterprises in the industry. This clearly reflects the increasing level of interest and role of Vietnam in the global supply chain.

However, the localization rate in many fields is still modest, such as textiles and footwear at about 45-50%, mechanical engineering at 15-20%, and automobile assembly at 5-20%.

The approximately 6,000 supporting industry enterprises in Vietnam only meet about 10% of the demand for components and spare parts for domestic production. If only counting Vietnamese enterprises, the localization rate is only about 15.7%.

The above reality shows that Vietnam still has a lot of room to develop the supporting industry sector, while also posing urgent requirements for improving production capacity, product standards, management skills and linking production cooperation in the chain of domestic enterprises with FDI enterprises.

Attracting selective FDI investment and promoting connections between FDI enterprises and domestic enterprises are also key factors in improving the production capacity of supporting industries in Vietnam.

The workshop is part of the series of activities of the Vietnam - Japan Supporting Industry Exhibition (SIE 2025) and the International Exhibition on Machinery and Technology for Manufacturing and Supporting Industries (VME 2025) taking place from August 6 to 8 at the ICE Exhibition Center (91 Tran Hung Dao, Hanoi ).
