Vietnam is ready to actively participate in global initiatives on digital technology and AI.

At the reception, on the side of the Ministry of Information and Communications of Vietnam, there were representatives of leaders of a number of relevant units. On the side of the United Nations, there were Ms. Pauline Tamesis, UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam, Mr. Quintin Chou-Lambert, Chief of Office of the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Technology, representative of the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amandeep Singh Gill stressed the importance of technology in advancing the UN's sustainable development goals. He said that a "Global Digital Compact" (GDC) is needed to build a new vision to strengthen international cooperation and global solidarity in technological development. The GDC aims to build an inclusive and equitable digital economy , especially creating opportunities for developing countries.

Regarding AI, Mr. Amandeep Singh Gill shared the UN's view: Countries should participate from the beginning in the process of setting rules for AI instead of just following the rules of the game as users.

The Deputy Secretary General also highly appreciated the efforts and successes of Vietnam in general and the Ministry of Information and Communications in particular in popularizing the Internet to all people. This is still a problem for many countries in the world because there are still 2.6 billion people who are not connected to the Internet.

Responding to the Deputy Secretary-General, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung said that Vietnam supports the United Nations Global Digital Compact, action plans related to the Compact, and wishes to play an active role in these networks and activities.

The Minister said that Vietnam is the center of Southeast Asia, a dynamic region and has lessons that can be shared with other countries, especially developing countries. The Minister also shared some of the achievements that Vietnam has made in recent times in the fields of telecommunications, digital transformation, etc.

The Minister of Information and Communications emphasized Vietnam's own, quite special, and unique approach to AI, with two forms: public AI and private AI. Private AI, first of all, is building virtual assistants, in which organizations and units build and develop AI themselves, using their own data and knowledge. The Ministry of Information and Communications is actively promoting the private AI model, pioneered by 34 units under the Ministry that are building virtual assistants to serve their civil servants.

At the end of the meeting, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung affirmed that Vietnam will actively participate in global initiatives and plans initiated by the United Nations. The Minister expressed his hope that the United Nations will continue to play a leading role in global issues such as digital transformation, digital development and AI./.
