Television footage showed the light-colored vehicle lying on its side after it overturned on the evening of June 11 as it was carrying guests from a wedding reception at a local winery, AFP reported.

Dozens of emergency workers were at the scene, their vehicles' colored lights flashing in the foggy night.

Assistant Police Commissioner Tracy Chapman said the death toll was expected to rise, with some people believed to be trapped in the vehicle and 25 passengers taken to hospital.

The driver was assessed in hospital before being taken to a police station in the nearby town of Cessnock, New South Wales, Ms Chapman said. "He has been arrested. He was the driver of a vehicle involved in a serious injury motor vehicle accident and charges are pending," Ms Chapman added.

The passengers had been attending a wedding together and were said to have shared the same car after the party, Chapman said, adding that no other vehicles were involved in the crash, according to AFP.

After the crash, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the wedding was a happy time for friends and family. "For such a joyous day in such a beautiful place to end with such terrible loss and injury is cruel and sad, and unfair," Mr Albanese said in Canberra.

“People are hiring buses for weddings to keep their guests safe, and that just adds to the unimaginable nature of this tragedy,” said Prime Minister Albanese. He also sent his best wishes to those in hospital and thanked emergency workers.
