On June 9, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Ngan, Deputy Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases, Cho Ray Hospital, said that after 20 days of intensive care, two male patients with botulinum poisoning were transferred to Hau Giang General Hospital ( Hau Giang province) for continued treatment.

Accordingly, the two patients, who are brothers (18 and 26 years old), have begun the phase of improving their physical condition and practicing abdominal exercises.

At the time of transfer, both patients were conscious and able to communicate. The older brother could follow some simple medical orders, but his ability to breathe on his own was still limited. This patient had better muscle strength when admitted to the hospital but his condition gradually worsened, with weak muscle strength and weak respiratory muscles.

The younger brother is a more serious patient. He is now conscious, can speak, nods, but cannot follow medical orders or do simple movements.

However, because the two patients are currently on long-term ventilators, this process may require training for 2 months or more. Currently, the vital signs of both patients are stable.

Therefore, to prevent the risk of infection as well as facilitate family care, the two patients were transferred to a local hospital (with the capacity to treat the remaining stages) for continued treatment.

According to Mr. Le Minh Hien, Head of Social Work Department of Cho Ray Hospital, the two patients are poor, so the hospital has mobilized benefactors to support the two patients with 130 million VND.

However, the total cost of treatment for the two patients was more than 300 million VND. After deducting the amount paid by health insurance, the 130 million VND in support was used to pay for expenses not covered by insurance. After paying the hospital fees, the remaining amount of support from the benefactor was given by Cho Ray Hospital to the patient's family.

As Thanh Nien reported, since mid-May 2023, 6 people living in Thu Duc City have been poisoned by botulinum due to food. Specifically, 3 children ate bread and pork rolls from street vendors at Children's Hospital 2 (1 child has been discharged). 2 adults (18 and 26 years old) also ate bread and pork rolls imported to Cho Ray Hospital. 1 adult (45 years old, ate fish sauce) was admitted to Gia Dinh People's Hospital and this person died on the night of May 24. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) brought 6 vials of BAT botulinum detoxification medicine to Ho Chi Minh City on the evening of May 24 for use by patients, all of them have exceeded the golden time for using the medicine.
