(Dan Tri) - Fatty liver disease is becoming more common than ever. According to a recent study, about 32% of adults have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Lifestyle factors play a key role in the growing number of cases. Diet is one of them. People with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease often limit their intake of oils and sugars. These can often help, but they are not enough.

Here are 4 common dietary mistakes that make fatty liver worse:

Eat too much salt

According to the Times of India , most people try to avoid added sugar, but one ingredient that is often overlooked is salt. Excess sodium in the diet can increase the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Eating foods high in salt can lead to insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and oxidative stress, all of which can contribute to fat accumulation in the liver.

People with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or any liver disease should limit their sodium intake to less than 2,300 mg per day. People with high blood pressure should reduce their salt intake to less than 1,500 mg per day.

Eat processed foods

Even if you eat a balanced, nutritious diet, eating processed foods can contribute to liver disease and worsen existing conditions. Processed foods include more than just chips and cookies, including white bread and pasta.

White flour is often highly processed and these foods raise blood sugar levels more than whole grains because they lack fiber. Processed foods are also high in fat, salt, sugar and preservatives, which are bad for your health.

Eat red meat

People with fatty liver disease should avoid eating red meat. Studies have consistently shown that eating red meat can worsen non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. A 2022 study found that people who consumed red meat had a higher risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Research has also shown a link between organ meat consumption and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Along with red meat, people should also avoid processed meats. Processed meats are high in sodium and saturated fat, all of which contribute to fatty liver disease. These include bacon, sausage, cold cuts, and canned meats.

Not eating enough protein

This may come as a surprise, but not getting enough protein can lead to fat accumulation. Protein deficiency can affect the liver's ability to process and remove fat. A 2020 study found that a high-protein, low-calorie diet can help eliminate harmful liver fat more effectively than a low-protein diet.

Focus on a diet low in calories but rich in high-quality proteins such as lean meats, fish, eggs or beans.

With the number of cases of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease on the rise, dietary choices are extremely important. Too much salt, often overlooked, can make the condition worse.

Processed foods, including seemingly harmless foods like white bread, also contribute to liver damage.

According to recent studies, you should avoid red meat and processed meat, while adequate protein intake is essential for proper liver function and fat loss.

Some dietary adjustments you can make are eating more fruits and vegetables, fish, high-fiber foods… You can drink a cup of coffee in the morning. Scientists believe it can reduce liver inflammation, although they need more research to know for sure.

Additionally, according to WebMD , research shows that losing excess weight is the best thing you can do to control or reverse metabolic-related fatty liver disease. A good goal is to lose 10% of your total body weight, but even losing 3% to 5% can improve liver health.

Talk to your doctor about the best way for you to lose weight safely and effectively. Options may include diet, exercise, weight-loss surgery, or weight-loss medications.

Fatty liver is associated with a number of other health conditions. Treating these conditions can also improve or reverse fatty liver. Conditions may include diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, polycystic ovary syndrome, hypothyroidism, hypogonadism, or growth hormone deficiency.
