VnExpressVnExpress02/11/2023

Sweet potatoes, green leafy vegetables, nuts, fish rich in omega-3s, dark chocolate, cucumbers and watermelon are foods that help protect skin from sun damage.

According to Dr. Nguyen Phuong Thao, Department of Dermatology - Dermatology Aesthetics, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, ultraviolet (UV) rays can be harmful to the skin, especially the thin skin around the eyes. Sunburn caused by UV rays can even increase the risk of skin cancer.

According to Dr. Thao, the best way to protect yourself from the harmful effects of sunlight is to limit your exposure to the sun. You should avoid going out during peak hours (10am-4pm) or apply sunscreen thoroughly.

Additionally, certain foods can help reduce sun damage to the skin. However, these foods cannot completely replace the use of sunscreen and other skin protection measures.

Here are 6 foods that help protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun:

Sweet potato

Sweet potatoes contain beta-carotene, an antioxidant that acts as a shield to protect the skin from UV rays. Once in the body, beta-carotene is converted into vitamin A, which can reduce sunburn.

Green leafy vegetables

Green leafy vegetables such as watercress, spinach... contain many carotenoids and antioxidants, which help protect the skin from the effects of sunlight.

Nuts

Chia seeds, sunflower seeds... contain a lot of vitamin E, an antioxidant that can help protect the skin from the effects of UV rays.

Fish rich in omega-3

Salmon, mackerel... are rich sources of omega-3, which helps reduce sunburn when exposed to sunlight.

Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate may provide polyphenol antioxidants, which help protect skin from the effects of UV rays.

Cucumber

Cucumbers are rich in vitamin K, which helps heal the skin, making them great for soothing sunburns. Additionally, cucumbers are 96% water, making them extremely hydrating for the skin.

Watermelon

Watermelon is a fruit that contains the antioxidant lycopene and the amino acid arginine. Both of these help protect the skin from sun damage.
