In a groundbreaking move, the US General Services Administration (GSA) has officially included three leading AI platforms on its list of tools allowed for use within the government apparatus.

The decision not only promotes the application of technology in the public sector but also fits with President Donald Trump's new AI strategy, aiming to maintain America's leading position in global competition.

AI: the official tool

According to Reuters, GSA announced on August 5 that ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google) and Claude (Anthropic) were officially included in the federal contracting system. This move allows agencies to deploy quickly without having to negotiate individually with each vendor.

The decision is in line with the Trump administration's AI strategy announced on July 23, which aims to ease regulations to boost infrastructure while boosting exports of AI technology to allied countries.

According to GSA, the selected platforms have passed multiple performance and security tests, are committed to federal standards compliance, and use AI responsibly.

“Our goal is to provide as many tools as possible to help government employees be more productive,” said Stephen Ehikian, deputy administrator of GSA.

The US’s large-scale deployment of AI in its bureaucracy has created a global ripple effect. According to the Financial Times , this model could encourage its allies, especially in Asia, to develop similar policies, becoming a model for other countries to learn from to maintain digital competitiveness.

Politicizing AI

Trump's executive order not only loosens licensing laws but also turns AI into a strategic tool in global geopolitical competition.

According to the Guardian , in the context of China pouring billions of dollars into chip production and developing AI models on par with Silicon Valley, the US is forced to accelerate to maintain its position.

Mr. Trump once emphasized that the AI race is "the battle that will define the 21st century." The AI plan includes nearly 90 recommendations, notably promoting the export of US-developed AI software and hardware, removing obstacles, and bringing AI companies to the global market.

This is a marked shift from the cautious approach taken by the Biden administration, which has required AI models to adhere to strict safeguards, focusing on ethics and social impact but has faced criticism for being seen as reflecting “radical ideology.”

Mr. Trump issued an executive order requiring any AI company seeking federal contracts to prove that their models are “objective and free from top-down ideological bias,” according to the New York Times .

The administration leverages hundreds of millions of dollars in federal contracts, and only companies that meet “bias-free” criteria are allowed to access the funds.

But legal experts call this a form of “indirect coercion” through financial policy. University of Chicago law professor Genevieve Lakier argues that placing financial conditions on AI content control could be unconstitutional: “If the government says it won’t contract with an AI to create content it doesn’t like, that’s interfering with the First Amendment’s right to free expression.”

According to the Guardian , Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's admission that he regularly uses AI like ChatGPT to consult on running the country has caused fierce debate among the public and experts.

Some scientists warn of the risk of misuse of technology in politics, arguing that AI could lead to dependency and lack of democratic accountability.

The Swedish prime minister's office insists it does not share sensitive information with AI, but many argue that using AI as a "secondary advisor" is a dangerous move in terms of ethics and security.

ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are not only the most advanced AI models today, but are also products of three leading US technology companies - OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, respectively.

In the geopolitical AI race, the presence of these platforms serves as Washington's "trump card" against Chinese rivals like Deepseek.

According to GSA, all three platforms have passed a series of rigorous standards for data security, integration capabilities, information accuracy, and especially ethical compliance in the use of AI.

The big plus is that ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are all widely deployed with hundreds of millions of global users, making onboarding easy and saving significant time.
