No need to wait until October, Hanoi in early August also makes many people stunned when it suddenly puts on a brilliant yellow coat.

On many streets such as O Cho Dua, Nguyen Du, Hoang Cau, Thanh Nien, Thanh Nhan..., rows of sycamore trees change leaves at the same time, creating a romantic scene not unlike a corner of Europe in the leaf-falling season.

In the early morning sunlight, each golden ray of sunlight penetrates through the changing treetops, reflecting a layer of gentle light onto the road, softening the hot summer weather. The thick fallen leaves on the sidewalk remind one of the romantic scene in temperate films.

The hoof tree (also known as Hong Kong hoof or purple bauhinia) is a popular ornamental tree in many urban areas. It can grow up to 10-15m tall when mature, with a light gray trunk, lush foliage, and low branches that create large shade.

The leaves are characterized by their two-lobed shape, resembling a cow's hoof. Each leaf has a long stem, prominent veins, and a wide blade, making it very effective in absorbing dust and purifying the air.

In addition to its aesthetic value, cow hooves also have the ability to clean the urban environment. The large leaves help absorb CO2, reduce dust from vehicles and release O2, bringing a cool, pleasant feeling to passersby.

The molting period of the hoof is rapid, usually lasting only a few weeks.

“Every morning I take my grandchild for a walk under the cow hooves. There have been a lot of fallen leaves these past few days, and the two of us enjoy stepping on the dry leaves that crunch under our feet. It feels as light as walking in the autumn sky in Europe. Hanoi really has some beautiful moments that not everyone notices,” said a resident on Thanh Nhan Street.

“The row of cycad trees has been planted on Thanh Nhan Street for about ten years now. Every August, the trees will change their leaves and turn bright yellow. A few weeks before autumn, the cycad leaves start to fall,” said Mr. Pham Ngoc Thuan, 65 years old, in Hai Ba Trung ward.

Not as brilliant as the Lagerstroemia or as bright red as the Barringtonia acutangula, the pale yellow leaves gently fluttering in the wind bring a very unique feeling - gentle, profound and full of Hanoi.
