Ensuring food security is one of the components of human security, a prerequisite for ensuring human rights. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), 309 million people in 72 different countries are affected by hunger.

In late September 2024, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) called for immediate global action to address the impending impacts of La Nina. La Nina is forecast to bring extreme weather events with serious consequences for food security, especially as some 282 million people are already facing severe food insecurity and need urgent assistance. This shows that climate change is driving an increase in the frequency and impact of extreme weather events, directly threatening food security.
In addition, the developments of conflicts in many parts of the world are seriously affecting people's access to food. For example, in the "Middle East fire pit", Mr. Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson of the UN Secretary General, said on October 11 that aid to the Gaza region is at its lowest level in many months and people are not receiving essential food packages due to limited access to aid supplies, and important relief routes into northern Gaza are cut off.
Faced with the complicated global food situation, as an agricultural country, Vietnam advocates firmly ensuring national food security in all situations, while promoting its potential and advantages in rice production, contributing to the global food market.
On October 12, on the occasion of visiting and attending the Opening Ceremony of the 2024-2025 school year of the Vietnam National Academy of Agriculture, General Secretary and President To Lam emphasized that the Party and State always pay special attention to and attach importance to agricultural development. Over 40 years of renovation, agriculture has made strong progress in both scale and production level, affirming its important position as a pillar of the economy , not only firmly ensuring national food security, but also exporting many of the world's leading agricultural products.
The General Secretary and President said that Vietnam is aiming to build "ecological agriculture, modern countryside, civilized farmers", developing smart agriculture that adapts to climate change, has green growth, and high added value.
The message is connected to the theme of World Food Day (October 16) in 2024 on “The right to food for a better life and a better future”.
As a responsible member of the international community, Vietnam is making efforts to transform agricultural activities to ensure food security, enhance resilience to climate change, while maintaining stable livelihoods and global economic prosperity, contributing to the common effort in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
