Fortnite's Road to iPhone Return Still Has Many Ups and Downs

Apple announced on March 6 that it had terminated Epic Games subsidiary developer accounts globally due to persistent untrustworthy behavior. The company said a court had previously granted it the right to terminate the accounts of any Epic Games subsidiary if it found it had breached its contract.

The move thwarts Epic Games’ plans to launch the Epic Games Store in the EU and bring Fortnite back to iPhones. As part of complying with the DMA, starting with iOS 17.4, Apple will allow iPhone users in the EU to use third-party app stores instead of relying solely on the App Store. Epic Games argues that Apple’s termination of its account violates the DMA and severely restricts competition on iOS devices.

Epic Games denounced its rival’s decision as a violation of competition rules, saying it was evidence of Apple’s unwillingness to allow legitimate competition on its platform. The company claimed the move was aimed at eliminating a potentially large competitor in the App Store.

The iPhone maker's move is the latest development in a larger legal battle between the two sides that dates back to 2020. At the time, Apple removed the game Fortnite from the App Store because Epic Games was flouting the company's payment system rules. In response, Epic Games filed lawsuits in the US and Australia, accusing Apple of anticompetitive behavior.
