Apple temporarily stops developing foldable iPhone

According to MacRumors , there is bad news for Apple fans who love innovation. Accordingly, the foldable iPhone project is likely to be stalled because the screen produced by the supplier does not meet the company's strict standards.

The source, Fixed Focus Digital, a widely followed tech blogger on social network Weibo, said that Apple has been testing many foldable phone models from competitors as part of its own research and development of foldable devices, which is said to have been going on since 2016.

At least one of the foldable phones being tested uses a display made by Samsung. Samsung is a major supplier of display panels for Apple devices and has also supplied foldable displays to the company in the past. A recent report even said that Samsung is working to improve its efficiency in preparation for the production of foldable displays for the iPhone, based on its experience producing foldable devices since 2019.

However, a Chinese blogger's source shared that Samsung's latest folding screen failed after just a few days of rigorous testing by Apple, putting the entire project on hold until the company finds a supplier that can meet its strict requirements for screen quality.

Earlier this month, The Information reported that Apple is actively prototyping at least two foldable iPhones, after more than five years of research and development. Both are described as clamshell-like, but are not yet on Apple’s product roadmap for 2024 or 2025. The report also noted that the project could be canceled if it fails to meet Apple’s standards.

It’s also unclear whether the pause will affect Apple’s foldable iPad project. Earlier this month, Korean site The Elec reported that Apple is considering launching its first foldable tablet in the next few years, a 7- to 8-inch device that could replace the 8.3-inch iPad mini.
