GĐXH - Some people subjectively think that fatty liver disease is not dangerous. In fact, if fatty liver is not treated promptly, it can progress to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

Fatty liver is a condition in which the amount of fat accumulated in the liver exceeds 5% of the liver's weight. This is not a separate disease but a manifestation of liver dysfunction, often caused by an unhealthy diet or accompanying diseases.

There are two main causes of fatty liver disease:

– Alcoholic fatty liver : The main cause is excessive alcohol consumption, which makes the liver unable to completely metabolize toxic substances, leading to fat accumulation.

– Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): Occurs in people who drink little or no alcohol, mainly related to overweight, obesity, diabetes or metabolic disorders.

Is fatty liver disease dangerous if not treated effectively?

The severity of fatty liver disease depends on the stage and severity of the disease. Initially, the disease may not cause obvious symptoms and does not cause serious liver damage. However, if left unchecked, the disease can progress and cause dangerous complications such as:

– Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH): This is a more severe stage of fatty liver disease , when liver inflammation and liver cell damage occur. NASH can lead to cirrhosis.

– Cirrhosis : When liver cells are damaged for a long time, the liver can become fibrotic and unable to perform normal functions. Long-term cirrhosis can lead to liver failure or liver cancer.

– Liver failure : Is a condition in which the liver is no longer able to perform vital functions of the body, requiring emergency treatment or a liver transplant.

Therefore, fatty liver disease can be dangerous if not detected and treated promptly. Lifestyle changes, a reasonable diet and regular health check-ups are important to prevent and control the disease.

How to prevent fatty liver disease

Preventing fatty liver requires perseverance and awareness of protecting the health of each individual. Some ways to prevent fatty liver that patients can apply are:
